ABOUT ELLEN

-1Ellen Freudenheim, MA, MPH is a freelance writer based in Brooklyn. An activist, researcher, and cheerleader for her hometown of New York, she has written about health, social justice, human rights, politics, food, community innovations, women’s and family issues, and travel. The author of a half dozen non-fiction books (including several about New York City) and many articles, she holds two advanced degrees, one in public health from Columbia University and the other in social sciences from University of Chicago.

Ellen’s writing has won her quotes and accolades in publications as diverse as the Wall St. Journal, The New York Times, Smart Money and Time magazine. The Associated Press, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Atlanta Constitution, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and the Chronicle of Higher Education, among others, have covered Ellen’s work. Such magazines as Seventeen Magazine and McCall’s have written about her work.

Her book publishers have included some of the best-known names in the book business, including Bantam, Abrams, and St. Martin’s Press-MacMillan. Ellen’s articles have been published in formats as diverse as newspapers such as the Philadelphia Inquirer, specialty newsletters such as CBS’ Marketwatch, community newspapers, websites and academic journals.

A sound bite veteran, Ellen has appeared on TV and radio numerous times. In interviews on NPR, CBS, ABC, NBC, BBC, CBC and the NY segment of the Today Show, she has discussed such topics as healthy aging; love, sex and baby boomers; adolescent suicide prevention, and corporate social responsibility for stopping genocide, not to mention where to find the best canoli in Brooklyn and or Thai food in Queens. She has been a featured speaker at private and public international business conferences and seminars in the United States and Japan.

Married with two adult children, Ellen is a dedicated member of the prestigious American Society of Journalists and Authors, the American Public Health Association—and the Park Slope Food Coop. She is currently working on her first e-book.
